Did You Know this about our African heritage?  

• Village life was different from estate life in that music could be played loud with an African rhythm.
• Our carnival attire is probably derived from the African Yoruba and Asante and others, as masked costumes were a feature of their celebrations.
• The Akan people have a spider hero called Anansi.  Ntikuma (Tacooma) was his son.
• The methods and shapes of pottery at Seaview Farm village have African origins. The decorative punctuations are also African.
• Emporor Halie Selassie of Ethiopia became a Messiah in spirit to the Rastafaris.
• Some words of broken English must have derived from the African language ‘Gullah’.

And Did You Know about this about our Culture? 

• In the 1940’s, Calypso was called "Benna". This referred to any secular or non-church music.
• In 1946, young men in the Point area set up the first steel band. It was called Hell's Gate. The first tune was "My Basket, my Green and Yellow Basket".
• About 1949, steelbands began to emerge. The Governor, Lord Baldwin, who passed a special Bill in the Legislature, encouraged them.
• By the 1980’s, ‘Dread' tunes rejected middle and white class values, by praising Africa.
• These are the things that make Antiguans so unique: Warri, Ducana, Fungi, Yabbah and Bambula.

• About 1936, Bertha Higgins was associated with the birth and development of Antiguan indigenous art.

Not long ago we received a very special explanation of God written by a young boy named Danny Dutton, 8 years old from California. This is a part of his 3rd grade homework assignment to 'explain God'. Although Danny's thoughts are not entirely correct it is an interesting essay!

One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to put in place of ones that die so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He does not make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way it does not take up his valuable time teaching them to walk and talk. He can just leave that up to fathers and mothers.

God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, as some people, like preachers and things, pray other times besides bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio and TV on account of this. As He hears everything, not only prayers there must be a lot of noise in his ears, unless He has thought of a way of turning it off.

God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere!
